Assessment of ultrasonographic and endoscopic changes in dogs with gastrointestinale disorders Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Malancus,R.N.; Malancus,C.M. Tofan.
ABSTRACT The study has been conducted over a period of 4 years, on a total number of 133 dogs, all of those expressing gastrointestinal disorders. Ultrasound and endoscopic examinations were performed in all dogs in order to assess any significant correlations between ultrasonographic and endoscopic findings. The results confirm a significant correlation between the presence of diarrhoea and increased thickness of the large bowel wall, with P<0.5. Another extremely significant correlation we observed is the one between increased thickness of large bowel wall and loss of layering at this level, with P<0.5. Upper GI endoscopy revealed that dilated lacteals in the duodenum are significantly associated with the presence of diarrhoea, P<0.5 and, more...

Biava,J.S.; Gonçalves,R.C.; Javorouski,M.L.; Bonat,M.; Lacerda,O.; Murakami,P.S.; Vilani,R.G.D.C.; Biondo,A.W..
This paper describes the in vivo Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) technique by endoscopy in tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) with clinical signs of tuberculosis. The technique was performed in two tapirs, male and female, from Curitiba Zoo, Paraná, Brazil. A flexible endoscope and a polyethylene catheter were used after the chemical restraint of the animals. For BAL technique, 60mL of saline 0.9% were infused with a polyethylene catheter, introduced by the endoscope's working channel, and 15mL of BAL were recovered, analyzed and submitted to cytocentrifugation. Slides were stained by Papanicolaou, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Ziehl-Neelsen methods contained high quantity of inflammatory cells on light microscopy (macrophages 27.5%, lymphocytes 0.5%, neutrophis...

Clinical use of laparoscopy in horses MV&Z
Silva, Luís Cláudio Lopes Correia da; Ferreira, Márcio Augusto; Baccarin, Raquel Yvonne Arantes; Fernandes, Wilson Roberto.
Although laparoscopic techniques have been known and used in horses since 1970, their clinical use has improved only during the last years. Laparoscopy is frequently indicated in cases of peritonitis, intestinal lesions, duodenojejunitis, adhesions, cryptorchidism, internal organ biopsy and diagnosis or abdominal abscesses and tumors. Adequate knowledge about the technique, laparoscopic anatomy and clinical applications wil1 allow laparoscopy to become a routine diagnostic method in equine medicine.

Comparison between three techniques for videosinuscopy in cattle Ciência Rural
Basso,Fernando Zanlorenzi; Busato,Eduarda Maciel; Silva,Jéssica Rodrigues da; Guedes,Rogério Luizari; Barros Filho,Ivan Roque de; Dornbusch,Peterson Triches.
ABSTRACT: Cattle have extensive paranasal sinuses that are susceptible to disease, most commonly sinusitis. The sinuscopy can be used to evaluate these structures, although there are no descriptions of this region for endoscopic anatomy, especially regarding the trocar position and the most appropriate type of endoscope. This study aimed to standardize the surgical approaches to sinuscopy in cattle by comparing the use of three endoscopes. Four accesses by trephination (one hole for each of the maxillary and frontal sinuses) were made in eight heads of slaughtered cattle. Each hole was inspected with three endoscopes: a 10mm flexible colonoscope with up to 180º of angulation, a 10mm 0° laparoscope and a 4mm 30º arthroscope. It was observed that all regions...

Teixeira,Pedro Paulo Maia; Souza,Erica Siqueira; Jark,Paulo César; Coutinho,Leandro Nassar; Silva,Alanna do Socorro Lima da; Guiduce,Marcos Vinicius Sicca; Maria,Bruna Piva; Silva,Paloma Espirito Santo; Semolin,Lívia Maria Souza; Silva,Marco Augusto Machado; Vicente,Wilter Ricardo Russiano; Tinucci-Costa,Mirela; Nardi,Andrigo Barboza De.
Laryngeal and tracheal tumors are rare in pets; some piece of information on their disease behavior, therapy and evolution are limited. Neoplasms in this area are a diagnostic challenge. In many cases, they can be biopsied and excised using endoscopic instruments, but there is no report of this in canines. The goal of this study is to report a successful case of a laryngeal neoplasm removal through endoscopy. A head and neck radiogram revealed a mass in the laryngeal lumen protruding into the trachea. The patient then underwent an endoscopy to confirm the radiographic diagnosis and to surgically remove the tumor. The histopathological diagnosis was poorly differentiated carcinoma. The most appropriate treatment for laryngeal tumors is the resection of the...

Endoscopic diagnosis and removal of esophageal foreign bodies in small animais. MV&Z
Corrêa, Valéria Pires.
Endoscopy was performed in sixteen animals, 14 dogs and two cats, with esophageal foreign bodies, referred to the Surgery Department of the School of Veterinary Medicine (University of São Paulo) and to a private diagnosis center in the city of São Paulo. The location, nature, texture and shape of the foreign bodies were assessed to determine the possibility of removal, as well as condition of the esophageal mucosa. Based on the results, it was concluded that esophageal endoscopy is a complement to the radiological diagnosis of foreign bodies. Their endoscopic removal was a practical and safe procedure, sometimes avoiding the need for a surgical intervention.

In Vitro Macroscopic and Endoscopic Analysis of Three-Rooted Maxillary Premolars and Two-Rooted Mandibular Premolars in the Same Individual: a Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Aracena,Daniel; Beltrán,Victor; Fuentes,Ramón; Borie,Eduardo.
The recent addition of endoscopy in dental practice has enabled clinicians to have an excellent view of the operative field, yielding highly successful visualization of anatomical structures that are difficult to access, both in oral surgery and endodontics. The purpose of this report is to provide an in vitro macroscopic, radiographic, and endoscopic description of the anatomic variation of the roots of maxillary and mandibular first premolars in the same patient. A 22-year-old patient was referred by an orthodontist for the extraction of all the first premolars. Once extracted, the premolars were examined macroscopically and then analyzed radiographically after trepanation and filled root canal systems. Subsequently, a diaphanization process was carried...

Investigation of respiratory disorders in Thoroughbred racehorses training at the Brazilian Jockey Club Ciência Rural
Pires,Natália Rebouças; Costa,Maria Fernanda de Mello; Ramos,Marcia Torres; Barreira,Anna Paula Balesdent; Borges,José Renato Junqueira.
ABSTRACT: Athletic horses need to maintain healthy airways for optimal performance. This study investigated the presence of respiratory problems in apparently healthy Thoroughbred racehorses in training. According to the Revised Consensus Statement on Inflammatory Airway Diseases of Horses (2016), determining the prevalence of respiratory disorders in different equine populations is fundamental for understanding these diseases. In total, 72 clinically sound Thoroughbred racehorses, in training at the Brazilian Jockey Club (JCB), were initially examined using interpleural pressure measurement by ventigraphy and respiratory endoscopy. When secretions were present in the airways, transendoscopic tracheal aspiration was performed, and the sample was sent for...

Lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and desquamations location in the gastric mucosa from asymptomatic Quarter Horse foals: endoscopic survey Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
DEARO,Antonio Cezar de Oliveira; LOPES,Marco Aurélio Ferreira; GANDOLFI,Waldir.
Gastric ulcer accounts for an important cause of abdominal discomfort in young horses. Concerning either the presence or absence of clinical signs and their variations, the lesions location in the gastric mucosa and complications resulting from ulcerative lesions, four clinical syndromes have been described in foals: 1) Asymptomatic or silent ulcers; 2) Symptomatic or active ulcers; 3) Perforated ulcers; and 4) Gastric or duodenal obstruction. With the aim of studying the distribution of lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and desquamations from the non-glandular epithelium in the gastric mucosa of young horses and a possible relationship between both alterations (lesion/desquamation), sixty Quarter Horse foals without signs of gastric disease underwent...

Microbiology of the middle meatus compared to sputum in young patients with cystic fibrosis from Bahia - Brazil BJID
Tunes,Alessandro; Reis,Joice Neves; Terse,Regina; Santana,Maria Angélica; Diniz,Ana Lúcia; Barros,Tânia Fraga; Leal,Ana Karina Souza; Paixão,Vilma; Grassi,Maria Fernanda Rios.
Lower airway infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cystic fibrosis. It is currently unknown if the infection of the upper airway can cause exacerbation of lower respiratory tract infection. This study aimed to determine the microbiological profile of the anterior paranasal sinuses outflow tract (middle meatus) of cystic fibrosis outpatients. The microbiological profile was defined using endoscopically directed middle meatal cultures. Paired middle meatal and sputum specimens were collected from 56 outpatients for aerobic cultures. A semi-quantitative leukocyte count of the middle meatal samples was performed. The median age of patients was nine years (3-20 years). Staphylococcus aureus (37%),...

Over-expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in endoscopic biopsies of ectopic gastric mucosa BJMBR
Martins,F.P.; Artigiani Neto,R.; Oshima,C.T.; Costa,P.P. da; Forones,N.M.; Ferrari,A.P..
Ectopic gastric mucosa (EGM) is considered to be a congenital condition. Rare cases of adenocarcinoma have been described. There are no data justifying regular biopsies or follow-up. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a protein involved in gastrointestinal tumor development by inhibiting apoptosis and regulating angiogenesis. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate COX-2 expression in EGM and compare it with normal tissue and Barrett's esophagus. We evaluated 1327 patients. Biopsies were taken from the inlet patch for histological evaluation and from the gastric antrum to assess Helicobacter pylori infection. Biopsies taken from normal esophageal, gastric antrum and body mucosa and Barrett's esophagus were retrieved from a tissue bank. EGM biopsies were...
